Adrien Emmanuel Rouquette, also know as "Chahta-Ima," was a native of New Orleans, La., who began associating with the Choctaw Indians as a young man. He was educated in France, began publishing poetry, and was ordained a Catholic priest in 1845. Rouquette served for 14 years as a priest in New Orleans before becoming a missionary among the Choctaw Indians in 1859.
